Take a Tour of Our Nursery School

Discover what makes the Co-Op unique among local-area nursery schools.

The North Haledon Co-Op seeks to satisfy both the children's need for guided play and social interaction with the parents' need for an opportunity to be a part of their children's first school experience. Please scroll down this page and see what the Co-Op has to offer your family.

Our Three Spacious Classrooms

Co-Op Classroom

Our school features three large classrooms, each staffed by two engaging, experienced teachers. These classrooms have multiple learning zones serving different purposes. There are tables for crafts, writing, and puzzles; well-stocked play kitchens; open areas for "circle time", dancing, and floor activities. Two rooms feature special reading lofts with children's books.

Large Gym

Our Large Gymnasium

The school features a 1,885 square foot gymnasium in addition to its classrooms. This large space provides an ideal environment for indoor play as well as enrichment programs and special events hosted by the Co-Op. Our gym is equipped with children's toys and ride-ons, floor mats, balance beams, and much more. Natural light spills in through large windows, as children laugh and play and create lasting memories.

Safe and Exciting Playground

A favorite of many children, our playground is tucked safely behind the building away from the road. There is plenty of room to run and explore. Tall trees create a scenic backdrop while shading our students from the sun when the weather is warm. Arrange an in-person tour and let your child try it out!

Our Curriculum

The programs at the Co-Op emphasize active exploration, self-direction, problem-solving, and social engagement with teachers and peers. We follow the state-endorsed Creative Curriculum, a hands-on program designed to foster a love of learning in nursery-age students.

Our philosophy and Goals

  • We believe that children learn best through their play, interactions, and experiences.
  • We believe children learn best when there is a strong partnership between school and home.
  • We believe in educating the whole child—encouraging social, intellectual, emotional and physical growth.
  • We believe that there is a critical link between a child's early experiences and later success in life.
  • We believe children learn best in a safe, nurturing environment.
  • We believe in providing children with opportunities for guided play and social interaction while providing parents with the opportunity to be an active part of their child's first school experience.
  • We believe in providing a carefully-planned, developmentally-appropriate program that is play-based and supported by current research.

At the Co-Op, we want children to:

  • Feel secure in a peer group setting
  • Progress at their own rate of development
  • Become responsible and independent
  • Understand their own feelings so that they can better cope with others and the world around them
  • Learn to respect the rights and differences of others
  • Develop a positive self-image, crucial to future school and life success
  • Experience the joy of learning through play

What We Offer Parents

North Haledon Nursery School

At a co-operative nursery school, parents play an active role in their child's school experience. The advantages are numerous. Children learn at an early age that their parents value education and want to be involved. Cooperating parents benefit by sharing in their child's learning and by observing their child's growth throughout the year. With a teacher, assistant teacher, and a parent working together in each class, the co-op offers a low child-to-adult ratio, with more one-on-one attention for each child. Parent involvement also helps keep tuition below the cost of other schools.

Parents who choose to assist in their child's classroom (at the further reduced tuition rate) are responsible for doing so about once every four to six weeks. Children often find parent involvement in the classroom helpful in the transition between home and school. Parents also get to know the teachers and other children in the group and can keep in close touch with their child's nursery school experience. Membership and class meetings, along with committee participation, allow parents to help guide the school's development.

Participation at the Co-Op is also a great way to get to know other families in your community. Many strong and lasting friendships are formed at our school, not just among the children, but the moms and dads as well!
